Pratjojo Dewo, graduated as Mechanical Engineer in 1989 from Bandung Institute of Technology, and Master of science in Materials science & engineering from Univ of Florida USA in 1993. He has been working in various field of manufacturing industries particularly related to the production of heavy equipment products. He has held several key positions involving quality, project, production, planning and engineering roles.
He is presently the President Director of PT Komatsu Indonesia which manufactures construction and mining equipment. His experiences and responsibilities cover the whole range of products such as hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, motor graders, off-highway dump trucks, its related components and cast steel products.
The heavy equipment industry in Indonesia has been growing significantly during the last two years and it is estimated will continue for several years later, despite fluctuative market trend for this industry in the past. One key of manufacturing process in heavy equipment industry is fabrication which can be categorized into general fabrication for light duty components and heavy fabrication for mining components.
Welding is main process in the fabrication since wide application and rich of technical skills and knowledges. It has specific characteristics such as using thick plate, high strength low allow steel material, joining with casting parts and mostly in big size are prone to defect. Particular welding techniques are required to manufacture those components and it will expand continuously inline with welding technology development. This presentation will describe about challenge relate to welding process of heavy equipment components especially particular welding method and welder capability.
To keep stable quality and productivity, welder capability is necessary to be maintained continuously However, it has an issue about aging of the workforce and it needs to be anticipated by applying more advanced technology of welding and systematic preparation of welder candidate. The extensive application of Robotic Welding in fabrication is one of method to solve the issue and improving productivity even more by utilizing global networks to create integrated robotic welding as SMART manufacturing. On the other side, in order to prepare the candidate welder more systematically, Komatsu Indonesia and the Indonesian Heavy Equipment Association (HINABI) have developed special competency standards to meet the skills requirements of welder for working in the heavy equipment industry. These will be adopted by the National Competence Standards for Working (SKKNI). It is also expected that this competency standards will be useful as special linked & matched curriculum for welder candidates at vocational school and shall nurture capable workforce to meet the on-going needs of industry
